Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq Shah

Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq Shah
(?-1325)
Originally, he was an important military officer belonging to the race of Qarauna (half Mongol) Turks. Under the Khaljis (1290-1320), he earned the so-briquet Ghazi Malik for his successes against the Mongols. In 1320, Ghazi Malik led a revolt against Khusrau Shah, purportedly for the purpose of restoring the primacy of Islam in the Delhi sultanate, which had allegedly been undermined by the neo-Muslim supporters of the sultan. Many of the senior nobles, however, were reluctant to join Ghazi Malik; some of them even sided with Khusrau Shah. However, Ghazi Malik was actively assisted in this revolt by the Khokhar chiefs, who were Hindus. After the overthrow of Khusrau Shah, Ghazi Malik was persuaded by the nobles to ascend the throne with the title Sultan Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq Shah. During his short reign (1320-1325), the territory of Telingana was annexed, Dehli's authority was reestablished over Ma'bar, and Bengal was subjugated again. On his return from Bengal in 1325, Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq was killed in the collapse of a pavilion at Delhi.
